The aim of this course is to assist staff with their understanding of what is involved in Adult Basic Life Support and how and when to apply it in their daily working lives. 
This course forms part of a blended learning training tool and is designed to support practical learning which is the prefered method of learning by the GDC for CPR/BLS/AED.

Aims

The aim of this course is to assist staff with their understanding of what is involved in Adult Basic Life Support and how and when to apply it in their daily working lives.

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Detail their organisation's responsibilities.
    Outline their own responsibilities.
    Initiate an appropriate emergency response.
    Respond immediately to a patient suffering from cardiac arrest.
    Care for the patient in an appropriate way following the practice protocols.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

  • Their organisation's responsibilities.
    Their own responsibilities.
    How to manage a cardiac arrest.
    How to initiate an appropriate emergency response.
    The safe use of an AED.

  • Scope of Practice (2013).
  • Principle 1: Put patients' interests first.
  • Standards 1.5: You must treat patients in a hygienic and safe environment.
  • Standards 6.2: You must be appropriately supported when treating patients.
  • Standards 6.6.6: Medical emergencies can happen at any time in a dental practice.

You must make sure that:

  • There are arrangements for at least two people to be available within the working environment to deal with medical emergencies when treatment is planned to take place.
  • All members of staff, including those not registered with the GDC, know their role if there is a medical emergency.
  • All members of staff who might be involved in dealing with a medical emergency are trained and prepared to do so at any time, and practise together regularly in a simulated emergency so they know exactly what to do.
