About This Course
The aim of this course is to understand how to manage a heart attack and undertake appropriate patient care during and after an event of this type.

The aim of this course provides information about managing a heart attack and providing appropriate patient care during and after an attack.
Objectives
During this course learners will be able to:
- Recognise the sign and symptoms of a potential heart attack in patients attending for dental treatment.
- Respond immediately to a patient suffering from a heart attack.
- Care for the patient in an appropriate way following practice protocols.

- The signs and symptoms of a heart attack.
- The management of a patient with a possible heart attack.
- The elements of good patient care pre and post heart attack.
- Practice protocols for dealing with a heart attack.

- Principle 1: Put Patients' interests first.
- Standards 1.5: You must treat patients in a hygienic and safe environment.
- Standards 6.2: You must be appropriately supported when treating patients.
- Standards 6.6.6: Medical emergencies can happen at any time in a dental practice.
- You must make sure that:
- There are arrangements for at least two people to be available within the working environment to deal with medical emergencies when treatment is planned to take place.
- All members of staff, including those not registered with the GDC, know their role if there is a medical emergency.
- All members of staff who might be involved in dealing with a medical emergency are trained and prepared to do so at any time, and practise together regularly in a simulated emergency so they know exactly what to do.
