This course is designed to equip the dental team, including those responsible for taking x-rays and performing other tasks related to producing an x-ray image, such as Radiography Protection Supervisors (RPS)  with knowledge on complying with statutory requirements, non-statutory regulations and specific areas that require special attention.

It provides the following elements in compliance with Schedule 3 of IR(ME)R 2017.

    Local procedures and protocols.
    Individual responsibilities relating to exposures.
    Responsibility for radiation safety

Aims

The aim of this course is to equip the dental team, including those responsible for taking x-rays and performing other tasks related to producing an x-ray image, such as Radiography Protection Supervisors (RPS), with knowledge on complying with statutory requirements, non-statutory regulations, with information relating to radiation legislation and practical legal requirements, duties and responsibilities with reference to the current legislation.

Meeting requirements in the IR(ME)R 2017 - Regulation 17, IRR 2017 - Regulation 15, and the 2001 Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners.

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to:

  • Define their legal duties and responsibilities identified in IRR17 and IR(ME)R 2017 for Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) and Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA)
  • Explain the key requirements of local rules, contingency arrangements, and the designation of controlled areas.
  • Define dose limits and their practical significance in a dental practice.
  • Describe dose constraints and considerations associated with carers and comforters, pregnancy, (staff and patient) and children in dental imaging.
  • Outline training requirements for staff.
  • Outline the process of risk assessment.
  • Understand when accidents and incidents need to be reported.
