This webinar discusses the challenges that dementia patients have in accessing dental care, particularly the older population who often rely on third party to help with oral hygiene. The degenerative nature of dementia results in lack of capacity and as a result best interest meetings are regularly needed. It is important to ensure that dental care professional are onboard with prevention to prevent dental disease from occurring in the first place. In this webinar we have a dentist and dental therapist who are sharing their experiences of treating patients with dementia and how they overcome barriers in Special Care Dentistry.

Aims

To explore the challenges faced by dementia patients, particularly the elderly, in accessing dental care, and to highlight the importance of preventive strategies. To discuss the role of dental professionals in managing the oral health of dementia patients, focusing on evidence-based guidelines and best practices.

Objectives

During this webinar learners will be able to:

  • Identify the specific challenges faced by dementia patients in accessing dental care, particularly those who rely on third parties for oral hygiene.
  • Recognise the importance of preventive dental care in older patients with dementia to minimize the risk of dental disease.

Dental Therapist in Special Care Dentistry

Ellie has worked as a Dental Therapist in Special Care Dentistry since 2014. While post-graduate education has included sedation and paediatrics, it is the variety of patients, including the older person, that Ellie finds most engaging about dentistry. Empowering the patient to make choices about their care for themselves and promoting home-care is at the crux of what she hopes to achieve for every patient.

Speciality trainee in Special Care Dentistry

Brasanyaa is a speciality trainee in Special Care Dentistry at Sussex Community Foundation Trust and splits her time between the clinics in Haywards Heath and Brighton. She focusses on assessing patients with complex medical history or special needs and works towards improving the oral health of the patients. She has experience in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery which she has completed her Dental Core Training 1 and 2 in. Outside of work, Brasanyaa is a keen badminton player and enjoys spending her free time with her 15 month old daughter.
