About This Course

This advanced level course is specifically tailored for clinical staff and includes the information covered in the Level 1 Safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk course. If you are a non-clinical dental team member, such as a receptionist or practice manager, we recommend completing P367 Safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk Level 1.

All members of the dental team must be trained in safeguarding and understand their professional responsibilities set out by the General Dental Council (GDC), Care Quality Commission (CQC) and the Health Inspectorate Wales.

This Safeguarding Children and Adults at Risk level 2 course is designed for dentists and dental care professionals.

The course aims to provide dental professionals with a comprehensive understanding of relevant laws, emphasising the necessity of safeguarding measures. You will develop the ability to recognise potential signs of neglect, abuse, or harm, while also gaining insights into their professional responsibilities in safeguarding patients. The curriculum further outlines essential practice protocols and procedures, ensuring you are equipped for the effective implementation of safeguarding measures within dental practice.

Aims

Objectives

During this course, you will be able to:

• Understand the terms 'safeguarding' and 'abuse' and articulate the reasons for implementing safeguarding measures in practice.
• Refer to specific laws and guidance surrounding safeguarding children and adults at risk, while also understanding the GDC, CQC, and HIW standards and competencies related to safeguarding.
• Describe local multi-agency arrangements for effective safeguarding.
• Understand the definitions of a child at risk and an adult at risk, identifying potential abusers and those who might be abused.
• Grasp the concept of a 'Looked After Child' and recognise signs of neglect, harm, and abuse, comprehending the detrimental effects on normal child development.
• Understand the role and responsibilities of the dental team in safeguarding, including assessing patients correctly and raising concerns when necessary.
• Learn how to define and establish practice processes supporting safeguarding procedures.
• Gain insights into the role of the Safeguarding Lead, including when to raise and refer safeguarding concerns.
• Acquire the skills to ensure a robust safer recruitment system is in place.
