The aim of this course is to increase awareness of diabetes mellitus and to enable the dental team to recognise and respond to episodes of hypoglycaemia.

Aims

The aim of this course is to increase awareness of diabetes and to improve understanding of hypoglycaemia and how to respond to these events in the dental practice.

Objectives

During this courser learners will:

  • Understand what is meant by the term diabetes.
  • Be aware of the signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
  • Know how to manage hypoglycaemic events in the practice.
  • Know how to administer a glucagon injection.
  • Know how to measure blood glucose using a glucometer. 

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course the learner will gain an understanding of:

  • What is meant by the term diabetes.
  • The signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
  • How to manage hypoglycaemic events in the practice.
  • How to administer a glucagon injection.
  • How to measure blood glucose using a glucometer.

  • Principle 1: Put patients' interests first.
  • Standards 1.5: You must treat patients in a hygienic and safe environment.
  • Standards 6.2: You must be appropriately supported when treating patients.
  • Standards 6.6.6: Medical emergencies can happen at any time in a dental practice.

You must make sure that:

  • There are arrangements for at least two people to be available within the working environment to deal with medical emergencies when treatment is planned to take place.
    All members of staff, including those not registered with the GDC, know their role if there is a medical emergency.
  • All members of staff who might be involved in dealing with a medical emergency are trained and prepared to do so at any time, and practise together regularly in a simulated emergency so they know exactly what to do.
