This webinar highlights the vital role of Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists (DHTs) in providing care for patients with special needs, particularly within Paediatric Dentistry and Special Care Dentistry, primarily in Community Dental Services. The session delves into the patient care pathway from a DHT perspective, exploring their scope of practice and contributions within the dental team. Over the years, DHTs have become integral members, focusing on oral health promotion and encouraging positive behavioural changes in dental health. Brasanyaa will share her experiences of working with DHTs in community services, discussing strategies to overcome challenges in Special Care and Paediatric Dentistry.

Aims

The aim of this webinar is to highlight the essential role of Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists (DHTs) in caring for patients with special needs and to review the shared care pathway, particularly within Paediatric Dentistry and Special Care Dentistry in Community Dental Services. 

Objectives

During this course learners will be able to: 

  • Identify the key role Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists (DHTs) in Paediatric Dentistry and Special Care Dentistry, particularly in Community Dental Services.
  • Explore the patient care pathway from a DHT perspective, including their scope of practice and integration within the dental team

Dr Brasanyaa Raveendran

Speciality trainee in Special Care Dentistry

Brasanyaa is a speciality trainee in Special Care Dentistry at Sussex Community Foundation Trust and splits her time between the clinics in Haywards Heath and Brighton. She focusses on assessing patients with complex medical history or special needs and works towards improving the oral health of the patients. She has experience in Restorative Dentistry and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery which she has completed her Dental Core Training 1 and 2 in. Outside of work, Brasanyaa is a keen badminton player and enjoys spending her free time with her 15 month old daughter.
